To see вЂit,вЂ™ of course, requires sort of knowing what вЂitвЂ™ is, which, IвЂ™m afraid to say, is generally a little woolly and hard to pin down. вЂњWe know it when we see it.вЂќ The 'Red Room,' and the backwards-speaking small man therein, embody a Lynchian aesthetic, and are part of what capitvated the show's cult following Really grasping the Lynchianness of T.P., or anything else, is going to require we look beyond what we вЂsee.вЂ™Дavid Foster Wallace, in his 1995 essay on Lynch and his then-forthcoming Lost Highway, defines Lynchian as referring to a вЂњparticular kind of irony where the very macabre and the very mundane combine in such a way as to reveal the formerвЂ™s perpetual containment in the latter,вЂќ but then posits the real test is experiential. An example of that Lynchian close-up - in this manner America met Laura Palmer Black humor, body horror, and leitmotifs factor in heavily. Action and violence sequences are portrayed coldly, eroctic and vouyeristic, some shots are held a beat longer than feels natural. It is, however, a prism through which we can perceive LynchвЂ™s directorial style, an interesting case of a TV show completely вЂlosing itвЂ™ between its first and second seasons, and telehistorically significant.
